Frequently asked questions

If what you need is not here, phone us on 07714 706119. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Pricing & quotes

How much does a timber window cost?

Every window we make is built to one opening, so there is no single figure we could give you that would be honest. What we can do is price your actual job, quickly and at no cost. Send us the width and height of each opening, along with a photograph and a note of the style you have in mind, and we will come back with a drawing and a fixed written price. Send us your measurements and you will have a real number rather than a guess.

Why are prices not shown on the website?

Because nothing we make is a standard size. A price list would only mislead you — two windows of the same style can differ substantially once the section, timber, glazing and ironmongery are settled. We discuss figures openly on the phone once we understand the job, and put them in writing once we have the measurements. Those measurements can come from you at no cost, or we can come and take them ourselves as a chargeable optional extra if you would prefer.

Do I have to pay for someone to come and measure?

Only if you want us to. Send us your own measurements and there is nothing to pay for the quote. If you would rather we took them, a measuring survey is available as an optional extra and is quoted separately — often worth it on period, listed or awkward openings where the sizes need to be right first time.

How do I measure the openings myself?

Measure the width and the height of each opening in three places and give us the smallest of each, along with the depth of the reveal. Tell us which windows open and which are fixed, and send a photograph of each elevation. If anything looks wrong to us, we will say so before we cut a thing.

Do you ask for a deposit?

Deposit and payment terms are discussed with you over the phone and agreed in writing before you commit to anything. Nothing is taken and nothing is ordered until you have seen the full cost and given us the go-ahead.

Timber & performance

Will timber windows rot?

Modern engineered timber, factory-sprayed on all six faces with a microporous finish, behaves nothing like the softwood windows of the 1970s. Kept clean and re-coated when due, a well-made timber window outlasts the PVC unit that would have replaced it.

How do timber windows compare to uPVC for heat loss?

Timber is a natural insulator and performs at least as well as uPVC on like-for-like glazing. Our standard units are argon-filled with a warm-edge spacer, and comfortably meet Part L for replacement windows.

What maintenance is involved?

Wash the frames with warm soapy water twice a year and check the seals. Painted work needs a light re-coat roughly every eight to ten years, sooner on exposed south and west elevations. Written care notes come with every order.

Can I have them stained rather than painted?

Yes — oak and Accoya take stains and oils beautifully. Painted finishes are available in any RAL or heritage colour.

Are the windows secure?

Doors come with multi-point locking as standard and windows with key-locking fasteners. Laminated glass is available on any unit where you want the extra reassurance.

Making & fitting

Do you fit the windows as well?

Fitting is an optional extra rather than part of the standard price. Most of our joinery is supplied to the customer or their builder to install. If you would prefer our own fitters to do it, we will price that alongside the units and you can decide either way. More about installation.

How long does it take?

Six to eight weeks from order to delivery in normal conditions. Where we are also fitting, a full house is usually done in one to three days.

Can my own builder fit them?

Yes, and many do. Every unit arrives finished and glazed with a drawing and the sizes clearly marked, so it is straightforward for any competent joiner or builder to install.

Do you use subcontractors?

No. Where we are fitting, the fitters are employed by the workshop that made your joinery.

Who takes the old windows away?

Where we carry out the installation, we do — along with the glass and all packaging, on the same day. Where someone else is fitting, disposal is down to them.

Can you make just one window?

Yes. Single replacements and repairs are welcome — we are not only interested in whole-house jobs.

Listed buildings & regulations

My property is listed. Can you help?

Yes. We have made joinery for listed buildings and conservation areas throughout Cheshire, and can supply drawings and section details for a listed building consent or planning application.

Do replacement windows need Building Regulations approval?

They must comply with Part L (energy) and Part F (ventilation). Where we carry out the installation we certify the work and give you the documentation your solicitor will ask for at sale. Where another installer fits them, that certification is their responsibility.

Can you match an existing window exactly?

In almost every case, yes. We take the horn detail, glazing bar width and meeting rail from the original so the replacement reads the same from the street. A clear photograph and accurate sizes are usually all we need to begin.

Working with us

Where are you based and how far do you travel?

Our workshop is in Northwich, Cheshire. We supply across Cheshire and the North West, and further afield for the right project — ask.

What guarantee do you give?

Ten years on the joinery, with the glazing units covered by their own manufacturer warranty. Where we also carry out the installation, that is covered for ten years as well.

Still have a question?

Send us the details of your project and we will come back to you within one working day.
